Frequently asked questions

What is the BC birth registration deadline?

BC parents must register a birth within 30 days at Vital Statistics BC. This is a hard deadline — registering late delays the SIN, CCB payments, MSP card, and birth certificate.

What is the BCTESG and how do I apply?

The BCTESG is a free $1,200 government grant deposited into your child's RESP. Apply at your financial institution between the child's 6th and 9th birthday — it cannot be claimed after age 9. Questrade is not eligible.

Does my BC newborn get MSP automatically?

Yes — BC newborns are automatically enrolled in MSP when you complete the birth registration through Vital Statistics BC. The BC Services Card arrives by mail 4–5 weeks after registration.

What is the BC Family Benefit?

The BC Family Benefit is a monthly, income-tested provincial benefit of up to $133.33/month for the first child. It is administered through CRA alongside CCB — no separate application needed once CCB is active and taxes are filed.

Is Questrade eligible for the BCTESG?

No. Questrade is not a designated institution for the BCTESG. Use TD, RBC, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, a credit union, or Wealthsimple (eligible since 2023).
