Frequently asked questions

How do I enroll my newborn in Alberta Health Care (AHCIP)?

Alberta does NOT automatically enroll newborns in provincial health coverage. Enroll within 90 days of birth using Form HC019 (Newborn Registration) at alberta.ca/ahcip. Coverage is backdated to birth if enrolled on time.

How do I register a birth in Alberta?

Register through the Alberta Vital Statistics Online Registry (obrs.alberta.ca). There is no hard provincial penalty, but registering promptly unlocks your baby's SIN and the Canada Child Benefit.

What is the Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB)?

The ACFB is an income-tested provincial benefit paid quarterly to eligible Alberta families. Maximum $2,011/year for the first child. Calculated automatically when you file your taxes.

Does Alberta have an RESP grant like BC's BCTESG?

No. Alberta has no provincial RESP savings grant. Alberta parents can still receive the federal CESG (up to $7,200 lifetime) and CLB for lower-income families.

What is the Alberta Health Care waiting period for new residents?

New Alberta residents face a 3-month AHCIP waiting period. Newborns born in Alberta to Alberta residents are not subject to a waiting period — they must simply be enrolled within 90 days.
